Harris Eisenstadt: Canada Day III

Dopo la prova notevole in Canada Day Octet, Harris Eisenstadt torna alla formula più frequentata del quintetto, al suo terzo capitolo, con risultati se possibili ancor più affascinanti. Un repertorio molto sofisticato, cesellato con cura in un anno di arrangiamenti ritoccati e un montaggio finale assai lucido, che rende giustizia ad ogni voce strumentale e scava in ogni sfaccettatura degli intrecci timbrici possibili.

Tra i batteristi-compositori capogruppo, Eisenstadt è (forse assieme a Tyshawn Sorey) quello che meno fa pesare il suo ruolo di percussionista. Non che sia laterale, anzi, è pur sempre il centro propulsore dei brani; ma il suo tocco è discreto e si amalgama con il resto del gruppo in modo impeccabile. E la sua sensibilità è in favore di una musica prevalentemente melodica, dagli ampi archi narrativi, costruita a sezioni dove variazioni e ritorni a capo si alternano e dove gli assoli sono brevi e significativi.

I temi si concentrano in frasi di poche note, dalla sottile potenza evocativa, intimista. Le aperture sono invece assai elaborate e usano in diverse circostanze il contrappunto. I brillanti Wooley e Bauder disegnano linee sghembe e si rincorrono con brio. Inoltre, utilizzano pronunce differenziate, al servizio della partitura. La tromba, ad esempio, passa da accenti odierni (sulla linea Douglas o Ho Bynum) ad astrattismi che riportano a Bill Dixon, fino ad exploit neworleansiani. I fiati di Bauder si esprimono ora in un legato indolente, ora in scattanti cascate boppistiche, generando collane di melodie. E uno spazio luminoso riempie il vibrafono di Chris Dingman, davvero originale, pregevole soprattutto in "The Magicians of Lublin," dalle atmosfere dolphiane, con frequenti cambi di passo e con un duo bruciante tra batteria e sax tenore.

Altro pezzo memorabile è "Nosey Parker," in equilibrio tra pacatezza tematica e anarchia solistica dei fiati.

Sensuale e notturno l'andamento di "Shuttle Off This Mortal Coil" e magnifico il finale, dedicato al maestro ghanese di Eisenstadt, Mamady Danfa, recentemente scomparso: un attacco à la Hemphill, poi una struttura a fuga con variazioni circolari e ritorno a capo.

Ottima prova di gruppo e molta voglia di ascoltare il quintetto da vivo.
