Eric Zolan: Calder's Universe
Musicians spend years practicing to become proficient. Technical ability is an important aspect of playing an instrument, but in order to really communicate a message, a musician needs to love the music as well. Guitarist Eric Zolan is obviously someone who has not only spent a great deal of time practicing but listening to music as well. This comes across clearly in his debut album Calder's Universe.

Zolan, a native of Connecticut, developed his chops playing jazz gigs with bassist Steve Clarke. He graduated from William Paterson University, where he studied with legendary musicians such as Mulgrew Miller, Harold Mabern, and Christian McBride. Since his graduation, Zolan has performed regularly at some of New York's finest jazz venues and he has appeared at venues in Europe as well.

Artists such as John Coltrane, James Brown, and Miles Davis are some of Zolan's primary influences. However, there are touches of Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, and Kenny Burrell in his playing as well. It's obvious that Zolan has listened to and studied guitar greats such as these, but his style is far from derivative. He has his own unique sound, and he is a talented player in his own right.

Calder's Universe is an impressive album featuring Zolan, Brian Charette on organ and synthesizer, and Jordan Young on drums. The trio setting of guitar, organ, and drums is arguably one of the best settings for guitarists, and Zolan uses it to its maximum potential. There is a cool, soulful feel throughout, and each of the players is in fine form. This is especially true of Zolan. His comping enhances what the others are doing and he has a melodic approach to soloing, which is enjoyable. Whenever he plays, he has something to say.

All of the songs are original compositions. Calder's Universe has a diversity of styles ranging from bluesy grooves to soft introspective pieces, and each song delivers. Despite the variety, the album has a cohesive quality overall.

The title song has something of a double meaning. On one level it is a reference to the artist Alexander Calder, but it is also a tribute to Zolan's father, who passed away in 2009. Calder was his father's favorite artist, and the song serves as a meaningful tribute. In keeping with this spirit, Zolan pays tribute throughout the album to many of the musicians who have inspired him over the years.

This is an album that deserves repeated listening. The level of musicianship and the quality of the songs gives listeners something to appreciate on several different levels. Eric Zolan is clearly someone who has an appreciation for jazz and a formidable talent for performing it. Calder's Universe is a universe worth exploring.
