Jeff Colella Putter Smith: Between Friends

Pierre Giroux By Pierre Giroux

Jeff Colella and Putter Smith are like peas in a pod, having made music together long enough to know that trust is more valuable than show. Between Friends is built on that trust from the opening notes, and neither musician ever seems to be trying to impress the other. Instead, they listen with uncommon patience, letting ideas emerge naturally. Their improvisations rarely fall back on familiar jazz vocabulary or well-rehearsed exchanges. Every phrase elicits a fresh response, giving the music an almost uncanny sense of discovery. It's conversational in the truest sense, where silence carries as much weight as sound.

The album opens with the first of two Smith compositions, "For Us," which begins with quiet assurance. The tune has the graceful inevitability of a modern standard, and its lyrical melody invites Colella into delicate harmonic territory, where both players shape the theme rather than merely stating it. Perhaps the emotional center of the release follows immediately with "Anam Cara VR," Smith's personal requiem for his late wife. There is no excess sentimentality here, only Colella's transparent voicings and Smith's warm, resonant bass lines.

The following sequence of four compositions by jazz legends was chosen with remarkable care, beginning with Bill Evans' "Laurie." This intimate reading recalls Evans' gift for fragile beauty, keeping Colella's voice unmistakably present and anchored by Smith's big tone. The brief rendition of Kenny Barron's "Voyage" does not diminish the interpretation's ability to enliven the album's flowing pulse, as both Colella and Smith are given room to stretch without disrupting the take's contemplative character. Thelonious Monk's "Locomotive" may not have received the recognition it deserved, but it arrives here with understated wit as Colella and Smith tease out the number's surprising lyricism. Finally, Billy Strayhorn's "Isfahan" is simply exquisite. Colella covers the keyboard with spirited flair as he delivers the tune's elegant melody. Smith's bass sings beneath him with remarkable warmth.

Colella's "A Prayer for the World" sets a reflective mood. Built on restrained melodic ideas, it unfolds slowly, suggesting hope without ever denying the uncertainty that inspired it. Smith answers each melodic turn with quiet authority.

The album closes with another of Evans' enduring compositions, "We Will Meet Again." In this poignant farewell, the interpretation becomes even more effective in this sparse duo setting. Colella and Smith transform every pause and note into the number's emotional weight.

The recording never raises its voice, reminding us that musical conversation rests not on virtuosity alone but on mutual respect.
