Corre sul filo della nostalgia, questo Benefit Concert. Un album che documenta un concerto tenuto a Roma nel lontano 1989. Nostalgia per Schiano e Kowald che ci hanno lasciato, che non ci sono più. E nostalgia per una musica che, anche lei, forse non c'è più: quel free jazz completamente destrutturato che già vent'anni fa (anzi, allora più di oggi) era considerato un'esperienza chiusa e storicizzata e che invece - come ci ricorda questo meraviglioso sestetto che raccoglie alcune delle colonne del free europeo - era (è) vivo più che mai.

La musica di questo album, il cui titolo è un ovvio riferimento al romanzo di Umberto Eco, esce infatti da qualunque schema consolidato, ivi compresi quelli del free. Evita accuratamente i classici stilemi dell'improvvisazione torrida e torrenziale, per svilupparsi secondo le dinamiche dell'interazione estemporanea. Interazione fatta di micro-spunti tematici, timbrici, strumentali. Interazione che crea una musica sempre in movimento, leggera ed impalpabile, pur essendo ricchissima in energia.

E la traccia conclusiva, "Lover Man," unica traccia composta di tutto l'album, ci sembra un'eccellente risposta a tutti coloro che, come ci ricorda Gaetano Liguori nelle note di copertina, pensavano (pensano) che il free sia "la musica per chi non sa suonare".
