Christy Doran's Sound Fountain: Belle Epoque

Ancora tre anni e il chitarrista Christy Doran, nato in Irlanda ma residente in Svizzera da tantissimi anni, taglierà il traguardo dei settant'anni. Ma siamo sicuri che le candeline le spegnerà con il botto che verrà fuori da un accordo energico sparato dalla sua chitarra elettrica nell'amplificatore di turno. Un botto fantasmagorico, come le avventure musicali di Christy, un artista che ha sempre affrontato le sfide musicali con grande energia e solide curiosità.

Per tenersi in forma, per questo interessante Belle Epoque, Doran fa debuttare il suo nuovissimo trio, denominato Sound Fountain, che lo vede affiancato da due giovani musicisti: il bassista argentino Franco Fontanarrosa e il batterista elvetico Lukas Mantel. Due ottimi compagni di strada che non si limitano ad accompagnare le evoluzioni del chitarrista ma si propongono alla pari nella gestione dello spazio scenico e nella ripartizione del lavoro compositivo. Un trio caratterizzato da una eleganza formale inappuntabile e dalla voglia di spingere la sperimentazione sempre in avanti.

La musica di Belle Epoque è sospesa sulla cresta dell'onda, sempre incalzante, nervosa e incapace di fermarsi. Le idee sgorgano una dietro l'altra senza aspettare mai un attimo. È un autobus che non fa fermate, per salire a bordo bisogna saperlo prendere al volo. In questi casi quello che conta è il viaggio, non sapere dove si sta andando. In questo modo la curiosità e la voglia di battere nuovi territori rendono più affascinanti le scoperte che si fanno guardando dai finestrini. Basta tenere gli occhi (e le orecchio, in questo caso) sempre bene aperti.

Gli otto brani che compongono questo ottimo CD ci regalano oltre un'ora di musica bella e coinvolgente, che non è possibile definire o catalogare senza rischiare di farle torto. Sarebbe esercizio futile che preferiamo lasciare ad altri. Basti dire che alcuni anni fa la si sarebbe spinta con forza dentro alla casella del jazz venato di rock o a quella del progressive sperimentale. Adesso questa musica viva e guizzante conviene non catalogarla affatto e ascoltarla invece con grande attenzione e profonda apertura mentale. Quello che possiamo affermare con certezza è che non si rimarrà delusi.
