Vandermark 5: Beat Reader

La notizia, vale la pena sottolinearlo fin dalla prima riga, è che i Vandermark 5 sembrano aver finalmente e definitivamente elaborato il “lutto” per la perdita di Jeb Bishop. Defezione imprevista e piuttosto problematica, anche perchè l’uscita dal gruppo nel 2005 del trombonista-chitarrista, rimpiazzato dal violoncellista Fred Lonberg-Holm, ha comportato un cambio di formazione che, a differenza delle partenze di Tim Mulvenna e Mars Williams, sostituiti dagli omologhi Tim Daisy e Dave Rempis, ha implicato un radicale riassetto del quintetto.

E così, dopo il positivo esordio nel 2006 con A Discontinuous Line, prima prova in studio della nuova line-up a pochi mesi dall’avvicendamento, Beat Reader segna un’ulteriore passo avanti in quanto a integrazione del violoncello di Lonberg-Holm e sviluppo delle potenzialità offerte dalla presenza dell’ultimo arrivato.

Basta il brano d’apertura, la meravigliosa ed evocativa “Friction”, per farsi un’idea della tavolozza a disposizione del leader grazie alla versatilità e alla camaleontica duttilità del violoncellista: introduzione ritmata in punta d’archetto, accompagnamento dissonante all’ingresso del clarino basso di Vandermark, incalzante sostegno agli svolazzi di Rempis al contralto - sempre fenomenale per obliquità e intelligenza nel fraseggio - e finale in bellezza, con alcuni tocchi di follia nel crescendo del pandemonio collettivo.

La musica non cambia, per fortuna, nell’irresistibile “New Acrylic”, con Lonberg-Holm ancora protagonista della tessitura ritmico-melodica del brano e finalmente lasciato libero di sfogarsi, con un solo sferragliante, stridente e sudicio di elettronica. Da segnalare a beneficio del violoncellista anche i tocchi espressionistici nella decadente “Any Given Number”, con un altro memorabile solo dal sapore post-rock, e la sofferta introduzione alla cameristica “Signposts”, dedicata da Vandermark al fotografo Lee Friedlander, padre di Erik.

Vertice della scaletta, almeno a parere di chi scrive, la funkeggiante “Desireless”, travolgente chiosa scritta in puro canone Vandermark: ritmo cangiante e scavezzacollo, soli brucianti, eccitazione spasmodica e irresistibili crescendo (vedete se vi riesce di fermare il piedino mentre l'ascoltate).

Insomma, difficile trovare di che lamentarsi in un disco che riconferma i Vandermark 5 come uno dei vertici del jazz americano dell’ultimo decennio. In pochi, al di là e al di qua dell’oceano, hanno saputo coniugare tanto felicemente quantità - una decina le pubblicazioni dal ‘96, senza contare le edizioni speciali e i cofanetti - e qualità.

Peccato che a cotanta abbondanza su disco non faccia riscontro una presenza significativa sui palchi del bel paese. Speriamo che qualcuno di buon cuore ci metta una pezza prima o poi.
