Cyminology: As Ney

Cyminology è dal 2002 il gruppo della cantante tedesco-persiana Cymin Samawatie, che arricchisce il catalogo ECM con questo primo lavoro per l'etichetta di Monaco di Baviera dopo tre album precedentemente realizzati per altre label. La musica è un raffinato jazz da camera basato su un classico trio pianistico, ma costruito in funzione della voce della Samawatie, che canta in persiano testi da lei scritti, o presi da esponenti della poesia persiana sia classica (Rumi, Hafiz) che moderna (Farrokhzad). La componente etnica si limita alla lingua usata per i testi cantati, e rimane praticamente assente dalla melodia.

Le atmosfere perlopiù rarefatte costruite dagli intrecci tra piano e voce rimandano a quelle analoghe dei duetti tra John Taylor e Norma Winstone negli Azimuth, anche se qui la presenza di una sezione ritmica fornisce a tratti una maggior propulsione. La musica è comunque prevalentemente scritta, e l'improvvisazione vi gioca un ruolo marginale; come nelle poesie da cui traggono ispirazione, i brani vivono essenzialmente di sensazioni e sfumature, emozioni evocate e suggestioni profonde, presenti sia nel timbro della bella voce della cantante, che nel pianismo rarefatto e minimale di Benedikt Jahnel.

Un disco che ha bisogno di più di un ascolto attento per essere apprezzato pienamente, ma in grado di ripagare con un'intensità non comune.
