Unlike a novel, where the writer needs to pique prospective purchasers' interest with the first paragraph, the instant attention-grabbing tactic is not always possible with music, especially if it's a live recording which captures the arc of a performance. So, while the opening track of Intention by the threesome of pianist Marilyn Lerner, bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Lou Grassi clearly establishes their working methods as the points of an equilateral triangle, it only hints at the pay-off in store ...

Canadian pianist Marilyn Lerner has garnered a name for herself as one of the most diverse and exciting pianists to emerge in the last ten years. Best known among her releases is a series of albums with the co-op Queen Mab Trio, with violist Ig Henneman and clarinetist Lori Friedman. But also included in her discography are several albums based around Jewish music, a duo set with guitarist Sonny Greenwich, and a number of piano trio releases, all drawing on ...

Queen Mab Trio: See Saw

by AAJ Italy Staff
February 12, 2008

Marilyn Lerner: Birds Are Returning

by Jim Santella
December 1, 1997

Recorded in Havana and featuring an international lineup, Marilyn Lerner's latest release builds upon the strengths of her trio and expands the ensemble in differing numbers. Joining pianist Lerner, acoustic bassist Kieran Overs and drummer Dafnis Prieto, are Jane Bunnett on flute and soprano saxophone, Cuban “young lion" Yosvanny Terry on alto and tenor saxophones, Javier Falbo on baritone saxophone, and Inor Sotolongo on Latin percussion. A trio of Cuban bata drummers is included on Horace Silver's “Que Pasa" and ...
