Chantal Acda: Silently Held

by Neil Duggan
Somewhere near the point where jazz, Americana and alt-folk meet, Belgian singer-songwriter Chantal Acda can be found. She has carved out a distinctive sound using a restricted and intimate sonic landscape crafted to enhance her vocal delivery. Her voice is soft and breathy with a fragile edge, and she delivers her lyrics with an intense focus. She has recorded solo and with differing groups of musicians on her previous albums. For Silently Held, she is joined by some outstanding players ...

by Emmanuel Di Tommaso

by Friedrich Kunzmann
Michel Benita's leader-debut with his Ethics band for ECM, 2016's River Silver, came as a welcome addition to his oeuvre and the label's catalogue, following the French bassist's earlier characteristic contributions in saxophonist Andy Sheppard's Trio Libero on Trio Libero (ECM, 2012) and Surrounded By Sea (ECM, 2015). As on the first Ethics album, 2010's self-titled effort released on OutNote, on River Silver Benita unified an international pool of musicians, with Norwegian guitar-scape designer Eivind Aarset washing atmospheric clouds over ...

by Mario Calvitti
Although the Belgian music scene is rich and varied, it is much neglected outside its national borders, as evidenced by the case of Aka Moon, an extraordinary trio that has celebrated 25 years of activity, but is still practically ignored by the foreign media. Let's hope the same does not happen with this new young talent, the drummer Antoine Pierre, and his group Urbex, already among the main protagonists of the 2020 edition of the Brussels Jazz Festival.

by Mario Calvitti

by Glenn Astarita
Belgian keyboardist Jozef Dumoulin incorporates some oddball and magical innuendoes with his Fender Rhodes and electronics implementations, and is an inventive improviser who comingles a flock of emotive voicings into his work. On this outing he leads an international outfit, featuring Clean Feed Records artist Lynn Cassiers who harmonizes with the instrumentalists via her angelic vocals, while also incorporating electronics into the grand schema, following suit with her band-mates. The musicians project lucid imagery throughout this live offering ...

by Giuseppe Segala
