Jacky Terrasson: Smile

Read "Smile" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

The stream of imaginative energy flows strong and true on Jacky Terrasson’s new recording, simply entitled Smile. The dazzling jazz pianist performs with panache and exuberance, adding his unique touch to a diverse mixture of contemporary and classic standards. The music remains true to Terrasson’s form, as it is somewhat of a return to the trio format of his early acclaimed recordings. His previous release A Paris paid homage to his childhood experiences in France and with more than a ...

With À Paris Jacky Terrasson comes up with another twist to follow his “What it Is" album from two years ago. That 1999 album on Blue Note, with Terrasson in an ensemble setting featuring Michael Brecker and Mino Cinelu, received mixed reviews amid suspicion that it was an overproduced record. This record however should hold up better- especially now that the initial shock of Jacky Terrasson having departed from his strongly-associated trio format is over.

Jacky Terrasson:

Every nation has its country music. Paris brings to mind cabaret, modal folk melodies, lively dances, classical tradition and hot jazz. Jacky Terrasson looks at Paris from each angle. With acoustic guitarist Bireli Lagrene, the title track simmers in the hot, summertime climate Terrasson knows so well. Guitarist and pianist team up again on “I Wish You Love," with Fender Rhodes taking the familiar melody. After all, Paris does have a reputation for romance. Cole Porter's “I Love Paris" gets ...

During a tour of Europe last summer, a number of American-based jazz musicians of Jacky Terrasson's generation settled in a small remote town in France to record an album. The studio had been converted from a winery. The camaraderie of the musicians developed from the fact that the closest town was 20 miles away. The result of the collaboration is Á Paris, Terrasson's tribute to the music he heard while he was growing up in the City Of Light.

Jacky Terrasson: What It Is

Read "What It Is" reviewed by Jim Santella

What it is, is hot jazz. With guest Mino Cinelu lending a dynamic pulse, pianist Jacky Terrasson has created a session that (1) reminds us why he won the 1993 Thelonious Monk Piano Competition, and (2) offers proof that his internship with Betty Carter helped him develop and sharpen these creative skills. Terrasson’s powerful piano artistry makes this an exciting album. The fact that seven are his compositions underscores the originality of the pianist’s music. Audio samples from the album ...
