Marc Copland: Another Place
Per il nuovo lavoro ha scelto la strada del quartetto, chiamando vecchi compagni di avventura con cui era già entrato in studio nel 1996 incidendo Second Look per la Savoy. John Abercrombie lo ha già incontrato quando era ancora, nei primi anni settanta, un sassofonista contralto. Musicisti fidati dunque, con cui ci si incontra fra un festival e l'altro e che hanno scelto di riunirsi per un progetto originale. Sappiamo già chi sono e dove suonano ed il rischio di cadere in una routine patinata, da grande pubblico, non viene neanche accennato.
La musica respira, come i paesaggi citati nei titoli e quello nella foto di copertina, con contributi di tutti i partecipanti ed uno standard di Cole Porter a chiudere. Le armonie di Copland ne esplorano i lati piú remoti, grande come sempre a tessere ragnatele in cui la direzione da intraprendere appare nascosta ai piú.
Dalla forza epica di "River Bend", con la chitarra orientata su toni rock, al soffice "Dark Horse" di Drew Gress, o l'"Another Place" del leader, ricco di sfaccettature ed ombre inattese, il disco è di quelli che lasciano un'impronta ed un quadro affascinante da parte di una formazione che non guarda alla velocità esecutiva o ai suoni eleganti, bensì alle possibilità di dare un contenuto reale all'improvvisazione.
