Trish Clowes: And in the Night-Time She Is There

Dopo l'interessante debutto di Tangent la giovane sassofonista londinese Trish Clowes fa un ulteriore balzo in avanti verso i territori di confine tra il jazz e la musica classica contemporanea. Così in And in the Night-Times She Is There - titolo tratto da "The Sphinx," poesia di Oscar Wilde qui in un'interessante versione vocale di Kathleen Willison - combina anche dal punto di vista strumentale i due mondi musicali. I primi quattro brani vedono all'opera un classico quartetto jazz (più il violoncello di Heidi Pearsons) con Clowes che mette in mostra una voce di tenore suadente e asprigna, un fraseggio sinuoso e borderline nello steso tempo, un po' come se Lee Konitz e Stan Getz si fossero dati appuntamento sul medesimo strumento.

La scrittura è organizzata su forme piuttosto canoniche ma vivacizzata da un sottile gioco di contrasti ed intuizioni armoniche oltre cha dalla brillantezza dei solisti. Ma è con i successivi brani che il disco cambia marcia, la formazione base viene raddoppiata con un quartetto d'archi guidato dall'emergente violinista Thomas Gould. Si aggiunge il piano di Gwilym Simcock e Clowes ha modo di sviluppare appieno la sua particolare scrittura per archi e improvvisatori.

I tre movimenti di "Iris Nonet" - suite dedicata alla nonna, scrive nelle note di copertina Clowes - sono una vivida, articolata, intensa, a tratti commovente testimonianza di questa visione musicale. Le corde degli archi creano tessiture nervose, inventano stilettate timbriche, provocano accidenti e agguati che contrastano ed esaltano la componente melodica delle composizioni. Che evoca paesaggi notturni, il mistero di antiche leggende popolate da gnomi ed elfi dispettosi, tra lirismo estatico e turbamento materico, tra dissonanze e dolcezze - ascoltate come la chitarra di Chris Montague si inserisce nella dolente "Iris Nonet III" e con pochi accordi distorti riesca a conferisce un che di allucinato all'intera esecuzione.

Talento cristallino da seguire con attenzione.
