Darrell Katz and the Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra: A Wallflower in the Amazon

In questo ottavo album della big band guidata da Darrell Katz e attiva sulla scena di Boston dalla metà degli anni ottanta, il riscontro stilistico più evidente è quello della buona integrazione fra la voce di Rebecca Shrimpton e gli eccellenti arrangiamenti di Katz.

Il repertorio è variegato e mischia originali di Katz con brani scritti da Duke Ellington, da Willie Dixon e da Big Maceo Merriweather, ma questo non diminuisce il notevole senso di unità che caratterizza questo progetto che appare come una lunghissima suite baciata da mille colori con una coda finale affidata ad un quartetto di sax e alla voce della Shrimpton.

Gli arrangiamenti sono veicoli perfetti per mettere in luce gli impasti strumentali lussureggianti e le doti dei solisti sempre fantasiosi e competenti. In particolare vogliamo segnalare la grande dimestichezza con il blues del tastierista Mike Finnigan, un veterano che aveva collaborato alla fine degli anni sessanta con Jimi Hendrix per oscure registrazioni casalinghe piuttosto sperimentali che poi avevano trovato il modo di essere pubblicate dopo la morte del chitarrista.

Le parti vocali interpretano testi piuttosto anti-convenzionali e ricercati scritti da Paula Tatarunis. Tutti i testi (compresi quelli di Dixon e Merriweather) sono riportati nelle facciate interne del bel digipack che contiene il CD e mostrano, oltre alla già segnalata ricercatezza, anche una buona dose di humor.
