Chie Imaizumi: A Time of New Beginnings
Il disco comincia con "My Heartfelt Gratitude," un brano molto delicato che evoca la nostalgia di chi vive lontano dal proprio paese, ben resa dal pianoforte di Tamir Hendelman. A seguire, "Information Overload" in cui è Randy Brecker a prendere l'iniziativa e affascinare l'ascoltatore. Momenti malinconici ("Fear of the Unknown" con il bassista John Clayton in bella evidenza) si alternano ad altri più gioiose che funzionerebbero benissimo in una colonna sonora. La scaletta si chiude con "Fun & Stupid Song," composizione dalla melodia accattivante ed un assolo molto lirico di Scott Robinson al sax sopranino.
La perfetta integrazione di solisti e composizioni, quasi avessero aspettato da tempo le partiture della Imaizumi, è una sorpresa che funziona per l'intero album.
La Imaizumi ha una sua idea personale di quello che intende trasmettere con la sua musica, ben diversa da quella di colleghe come Carla Bley o Maria Schneider, ma, come loro, ha le qualità per fare rendere al massimo la band ed i musicisti scelti per interpretare la sua musica.
Senza momenti a vuoto e con temi che in qualche modo sembrano arrivare da una memoria jazzistica collettiva, A Time of New Beginnings ha il raro dono di essere un album allo stesso tempo molto complesso e ma facile da ascoltare.
