Pedro Molina: À Procura
Pedro Molina's debut album, À Procura (translated as "In Search Of"), is a captivating odyssey through his refined musical vision. Released in 2024 under the Carimbo Porta-Jazz label, the album not only displays Molina's formidable bass guitar prowess but also his proficient skill as a composer and bandleader.

Originally hailing from Murcia, Spain and now based in Porto, Portugal, Molina has long been a fixture in the jazz scene as a double bassist. However, À Procura marks a turning point in his career, as he steps into the role of quartet leader. His ensemble—featuring Filipe Dias on guitar, Miguel Meirinhos on piano and Gonçalo Ribeiro on drums—brings a rich, collaborative energy to the project. They often weave introspective soundscapes that could make even the most stoic listener contemplate the meaning of life.

The album opens with "Reflexiones Tardías," immersing the listener in a laid-back, free-flowing sonic environment. The piece blends elements of jazz with improvisational freedom, while Dias' mid-tone guitar lines, enhanced by a touch of distortion, set the mood for a thoughtful musical dialogue.

Dias' guitar work is intricate and evocative, navigating through complex harmonies and rhythms as if he were a tightrope walker in a circus of sound. "A Salto de Mata" stands out as an up-tempo highlight, with Meirinhos' nimble soloing driving the piece, anchored by the quartet's solid yet flexible foundation. The ballad "Calma" offers a more relaxed vibe, though Dias' distortion-laced phrases take it into an abstract, improv-heavy direction that might leave listeners wondering if their record player has developed a mind of its own.

One of the album's standout tracks, "Under Her Eye," encapsulates Molina's ability to blend historical and contemporary jazz influences. The guitarist and pianist deliver complex unison choruses, followed by robust soloing, as Ribeiro's drums guide the track to a powerful closeout.

Molina invites listeners to get lost with him in the music, as if he is saying, "Let us wander and see what we discover." This sense of adventure and curiosity makes À Procura a strong debut from this talented artist.
