Ma quello che poteva essere un vero punto di forza si rivela il tallone d’Achille di una registrazione che azzera le diversità sia compositive che vocali e sfocia in un prodotto tecnicamente ineccepibile, accurato ma musicalmente monocromo e incomprensibilmente omogeneo.
Che siano le robuste architetture di Mary Lou Williams o la sofisticata scrittura di Carla Bley, la band suona con la stessa idea di swing e la stessa sonorità da night club di lusso. Mentre la voce classicamente impostata di Judi Silvano arrotonda le asperità espressive di Sheila Jordan, ingentilisce il blues rurale e scandaloso di Bessie Smith, normalizza il canto profondo e granuloso di Abbey Lincoln.
Un occasione perduta.
