I dischi di Shirley Horn per la Verve hanno segnato per la cantante-pianista statunitense una seconda vita artistica, foriera di più ampi riconoscimenti. Questo doppio CD antologico enuclea alcuni degli episodi più rilevanti, dove lasciano il segno anche preziosi cammeo di Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Toots Thielemans e Wynton Marsalis. In primo piano l'eterea sensualità del suo canto sussurrato, che dalle predilette formule in trio si apre soavemente ai timbri orchestrali di Johnny Mandell. Ne discende un percorso di grande varietà stilistica, che dal gioioso andamento swingante di "Come Dance with Me" tocca vertici di trasognato lirismo nell'aggraziata rivisitazione di "Solitary Man."

L'elegante contrappunto degli archi impreziosisce la sobria eleganza di un canto estremamente variato negli accenti, ben esemplificato dalla rilettura di "You Go to My Head." Vi prevale un sottile ed affascinante slittamento ritmico della voce, che tende a ritardare l'enunciazione del testo con swingante naturalezza.

Due ore di grande musica tra intense riletture di un repertorio scelto in accordo con l'intimo sentire umano della Horn, sempre incisiva nel suo elegante equilibrio. Ogni brano qui proposto si impone per una sensibilità interpretativa acuta ed empatica, di grande coerenza e rigore espressivo. È una musica che cattura in modo pervasivo l'ascoltatore, guidandolo in un intimo viaggio, le cui tappe si rivelano di volta in volta un'appagante avventura.
