White Rocket: White Rocket

Vi è da anni a Dublino una scena improvvisativa underground assai vivace e promettente che ha deciso di riunirsi in un progetto denominato Bottlenote, una sorta di collettivo che organizza concerti, promuove incontri, fornisce informazioni, produce dischi attraverso l'etichetta associata Diatribe.

Da Bottlenote sono usciti gruppi come il pluripremiato Trihornophone, avanguardia che incontra la musica folk, come Zoid Ensemble, dieci musicisti che fanno convivere i loro strumenti acustici con il software Max/MSP del leader Daniel Jacobson, e White Rocket.

Dove il talentuoso pianista Greg Felton e il batterista Sean Carpio, entrambi dublinesi, incontrano il trombettista di Chicago, ma residente a New York, Jacob Wick per dar vita ad un trio travolgente, eccitante che ha pochi eguali per intensità, ricchezza di idee, rigore, imprevedibilità e coerenza.

Potremmo dire che in White Rocket l'avanguardia incontra il free jazz che a sua volta incontra la musica contemporanea che incontra la musica pop che a sua volta incontra la musica indiana che incontra...

Ma saremmo ingiusti nei confronti di questi musicisti che elaborano un linguaggio assolutamente personale e originale, che intrecciano composizione e improvvisazione con grande naturalezza, che fanno convivere inusuali scansioni metriche con melodie disegnate nell'aria e nella mente più che scritte sul pentagramma, che alimentano una continua tensione dinamica conservando una souplesse esecutiva ineccepibile, che associano la naturale curiosità e il contagioso entusiasmo delle menti giovanili più fervide con una maturità compositiva ed esecutiva sorprendente.

Jacob Wick ha un controllo straordinario dello strumento con il quale ricerca inusuali sequenze armoniche e pennellate timbriche di purezza cristallina. Immaginate il Dave Douglas più metafisico, associatelo ad un Joe McPhee ispirato con qualche spruzzata del sanguigno Lee Morgan e avrete una vaga idea del mondo musicale del trombettista americano. Greg Felton mostra un pianismo discreto e penetrante, poco appariscente ma di sostanza, fluttuante e lirico, collocabile in un luogo indefinito tra Paul Bley e Mattew Shipp, dalle enormi potenzialità tutte da scoprire. Sean Carpio con il suo drumming elastico e aperto è il complemento decisivo per dar forma alle architetture sonore del trio.

Sarà per la saturazione di un mercato sempre più omologato, sarà perché le produzioni indipendenti per poter penetrare in qualche modo questo mercato non sempre riescono a trovare equilibrio tra autonomia e fruibilità, sarà perché ne abbiamo fin sopra i capelli di millantati nuovi geni della musica jazz, ma White Rock ci sembra uno dei debutti più entusiasmanti degli ultimi tempi.
