Caroline Kraabel - Phil Hargreaves: Where We Were

Un vociare fitto e continuo, una ridda di voci apre un disco costruito montando una serie di sessions registrate “sul campo”. Kraabel e Hargreaves hanno scelto di dare maggiore suggestione al proprio dialogo a due cercando di interagire con i luoghi simbolo della natìa Liverpool (il teatro St. George, l’Università, il Wallasey Tunnel, Sefton Park). L’uso dei suoni come terzo elemento (voci, sirene,) avrebbe dovuto dare corpo alla musica. Almeno sulla carta.

Il risultato è invece una musica priva di spessore. I due sembrano votati ad una ricerca timbrica esasperata, che alla fine non fa che produrre una musica contratta, singhiozzante, priva di mordente. Un’ora abbondante di cigolii, squittii e colpi d’ancia, senza che si riesca a intravedere una via d’uscita, un punto di fuga, sembra davvero eccessiva.

Rallentato, senza slancio, il disco offre pochi guizzi. Tra questi, l’improvviso, nervoso e audace dialogo tra sax tenore e soprano a metà del secondo brano. Per un attimo si è quasi folgorati da un bagliore improvviso. Poi, si ripiomba in una dimensione claustrofobica.
