Gaetano Liguori - Andrew Cyrille - Guido Mazzon: When We Were Kings
Gaetano Liguori e Guido Mazzon sono stati tra i principali protagonisti di quegli anni, corifei di un jazz spesso povero di contenuti musicali a causa dell'indecisione sulla via lessicale da seguire, fra la frantumazione del linguaggio tradizionale che avveniva in Europa (per quanto riguarda il pianoforte, ad esempio i famosi trii di Alexander von Schlippenbach/Evan Parker/Paul Lovens e Fred Van Hove/Peter Broetzmann/Han Bennink) ed un free jazz americano (di cui la stessa Soul Note ha pubblicato importanti opere) in fondo mai compreso nella sua tecnica di base.
Questa volta sono insieme ad un grandissimo batterista, Andrew Cyrille, un personaggio che ha inciso insieme a pianisti che sembrano di un'altra galassia: Borah Bergman, Irene Schweizer e, ovviamente, Cecil Taylor.
I tre dedicano When Were Kings a Muhammad Ali (nome che è il titolo di una composizione di Andrew Cyrille su un vecchio disco DIW del quintetto di David Murray/James Newton) e lo fanno nel migliore dei modi: risultando compatti e con una via comune da percorrere, elastici e danzanti come il grande pugile. Cyrille catalizza le energie presenti in studio con i suoi ritmi precisi che danno ispirazione ai due italiani.
È bello il lungo brano di apertura, che si sviluppa con pochi mezzi intorno ad un ritmo su cui Mazzon - con il suo strumentismo naive - ha modo di dispiegare le sue note grevi di rabbia, espressione della libertà che il pugile afroamericano ha sempre richiesto. Quasi un'ora di musica che disperde cluster ad una velocità comprensibile e che richiede poco agli ascoltatori per essere recepita: un pregio non da poco in un lavoro fatto bene.
