Grismore-Scea Group: Well Behaved Fish
Il CD apre con “Dancing in your Head“ di Ornette Coleman, cui seguono dieci brani di varia durata a firma dei due leader; ma la traccia è chiaramente segnata. Il clima generale dell’ultima incisione del Grismore/Scea Group ha infatti come riferimento principale l’Ornette Coleman della svolta elettrica, quella che ha sconvolto i puristi alla metà degli Anni Settanta.
Ma non mancano echi del Davis elettrico e di certo free-funk, come in “Spinach Dip“, con il flauto guizzante di Scea in bella evidenza. L’apertura di “Cletus N’gugu“ ricorda lo Stevie Wonder d’annata, gli esperimenti con la chitarra synth in “Crash“ creano un effetto Stan Kenton da terzo millennio. Per continuare con la filastrocca ipnotica di “Pigs at the Trough“ e i riffs alla James Brown della conclusiva “Good God“, con i fiati, naturalmente, a farla da padrone.
Nonostante la molteplicità dei riferimenti il disco ha una sua unità stilistica grazie alla compattezza della formazione, ad un approccio disinvolto e creativo, ad un uso intelligente dell’elettronica e ad un suono indecifrabile ed affascinante.
