Implacabile. Elephant9 è un trio che non lascia scampo. L'intensità che sprigiona, il magma incandescente che fuoriesce senza soluzione di continuità, l'esasperazione come fattore primario, sono i cardini di un'estetica che non ammette i se, i forse, i ma.

O la si condivide, aprendo le orecchie ad un ascolto scevro da preconcetti, o la si rifiuta in blocco senza possibilità d'appello. La presenza ingombrante dell'organo hammond è lontana parente dei classici organ-trio targati Blue Note e si discosta parecchio anche dalle versioni attuali tipo Medeski-Martin-Wood. Qui, piuttosto, si affonda a piene mani nelle formazioni rock Anni Settanta quali Deep Purple, E.L.P., King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, che delle molteplici possibilità offerte dall'organo facevano una ragione estetica.

Nell'iniziale "Fugl Fonix" la batteria di Torstein Lofthus picchia come un fabbro, il basso di Nikolai Hengsle Eilertsen pulsa come un cuore impazzito e l'hammond di Storlokken sembra un aereo a reazione che sta portando a temperatura i motori. "Aviation" porta dritto agli Anni Settanta con quell'energia un poco barocca e ridondante a cavallo tra glamour e progressive rock. La title track è un inquietante ossessivo divagare dell'hamond su frequenze che non sarebbero dispiaciute a Sun Ra.

"Habanera Rocket" è una marea che avanza lenta e inesorabile, un mantra elettronico che poco a poco libera energia contagiosa per ricomporsi in un finale acquoso e inquietante. Groove sparato a mille, riff mozzafiato, scintille ovunque, la sensazione di essere seduto su un treno senza macchinista lanciato a mille, ovvero "John Tinnick" è la degna chiusura di un album intrigante.
