Orbital Quintet: Vol.2

Seemingly influenced by any music that passes their inquisitive collective ear, Oakland's Orbital Quintet second offering, Vol. 2, opens the quixotic "Devil's Breath" with a blare that morphs to a languid simmer of guitar hijinks courtesy of DV Wright.

With music that conjures an explorative jazz band from David Lynch's hallucinatory Twin Peaks, Orbital Quintet—Wright, bassist Benjamin Lee, trumpeter John Harrington, drummer Kyle Mueller and saxophonist David Tidball—pursue time at their own sweet, time-elapsed pace. Sliding effortlessly into the bandstand shuffle of "50 Minutes," with tenor and trumpet leading the dance as Wright paints his pianistic chords into a delicate, expressive solo. The gorgeously romantic "Satet" wanders into the stop-start jam of "The Canopy," to the bop-jump "Politics," back to the shimmering, late night "Far Removed," wherein horn players Tidball and Harrington further reveal their inner Miles Davis and Johnny Hodges. A substantive set of textured originals written by Lee, Wright, and Tidball, that drift into and out of your consciousness, boding well for more quiet inventions in the future.
