Giovanni Mirabassi Trio & Strings: Viva V.E.R.D.I.

Da anni residente a Parigi e più noto all'estero che da noi, Giovanni Mirabassi è un pianista dotato di ottima tecnica e autore di alcuni bei lavori, specie in trio. E proprio su questa formazione è basato Viva V.E.R.D.I., registrato dal vivo a Goyang, in Corea del Sud, assieme al contrabbassista Gianluca Renzi, già in passato collaboratore del pianista e autore di alcune dei brani, e al batterista Lukmil Perez Herrera.

Ma la particolartà del lavoro è che assieme al trio è in scena un ampia orchestra d'archi locale (con alcune aggiunte), diretta dal compositore e direttore d'orchestra italiano Lorenzo Pagliei. In programma (il titolo è solo un ellittico ossequio alla melodia italiana) brani originali, oltre a due omaggi: uno a Hermeto Pascoal, l'altro alla Corea, con la conclusiva canzone folk "Arirang."

Come spesso succede, non è semplice giudicare l'incontro tra jazz e orchestra d'archi: troppo distanti non tanto le sonorità e la tradizione, quanto le atmosfere che un numero così elevato di corde inevitabilmente evocano rispetto al dinamismo e all'asciuttezza di un trio piano-basso-batteria. E questo anche quando in scena ci sia un pianista comunque lirico ed estroverso qual è Mirabassi.

Ciò non significa che il disco manchi di qualità e attrattive: melodicamente indovinati pressoché tutti i temi, estremamente brillanti le improvvisazioni, curati gli arrangiamenti degli archi, molto coinvolgente l'assieme. I musicisti, poi, mostrano grandi qualità: Mirabassi ha un estro torrenziale e una grande varietà armonica, mentre Renzi si produce in alcuni assoli di grande profondità (Herrera, quasi fatalmente in tale contesto, rimane un po' più nell'ombra). E il pubblico, infatti, pare dalla registrazione gradire molto lo spettacolo.

Rimane quindi solo quella sensazione di dolce in eccesso prodotta dalle sonorità degli archi, per giunta così stridente con le improvvisazioni. Sensazione, tuttavia, certo soggettiva: se il palato di chi ascolta è in grado di apprezzarla, VIVA V.E.R.D.I. è un lavoro piacevole e ricco di momenti trascinanti.
