Alexander Hawkins / Elaine Mitchener Quartet: UpRoot

Alexander Hawkins, pianista avventuroso pur senza eccessivi salti nel vuoto, frequenta svariati organici, di cui questo —piano trio più voce —potrebbe anche apparire abbastanza usuale, se non fosse che poi, alla prova dei fatti, tutto procede abbastanza eccentrico rispetto a tale assunto.

La cointestataria del quartetto, la vocalista anglo-giamaicana Elaine Mitchener, per cominciare, non è minimamente una cantante tradizionale. Non è, anzi, neppure una cantante. Non solo, almeno. Dice, porge, declama, oltre a cantare (comunque secondo parametri sempre piuttosto personali), come svariati momenti del disco testimoniano, e del resto neppure basso e batteria si muovono secondo canoni particolarmente battuti.

Si parte con un brano di Patty Waters, "Why Is Love Such a Funny Thing?," elegante e rarefatto, così come una vena di astrazione attraversa anche il più ampio "The Miracle" dovuto alla penna di un'altra cantante a sua volta alquanto sui generis, Jeanne Lee, dove per la prima volta si sente la voce detta anziché cantata di Elaine Mitchener. Più mosso e nervoso il dittico che segue, comprendente "UpRoot," primo tema di Hawkins (su testo di Lyn Hejinian), e "If You Say So," impro quartettistica, felicemente inventiva.

Segue uno dei temi più noti di Archie Shepp, "Blasé," efficace per quanto lievemente monocorde, quindi "OM-SE Environment Music," ancora di Hawkins (testo, qui, di Emily Co), attraversato da belle dinamiche e un canto molto "drammaturgico," con un segmento centrale in piano trio decisamente tellurico. Clima sospeso in "Joy," entro le cui maglie la voce s'insinua con estrema parsimonia, e finale tritematico, con "Directives" a firma della cantante, "Walk Nikely" e "I'll Meet You There" dovuti invece al pianista (in quest'ultimo caso su testo persiano tradotto da Coleman Barks). Il clima globale torna a inspessirsi, a farsi più increspato, avventuroso, con la Mitchener che riguadagna il centro delle operazioni, a suggello di un album inventivo e mai supino.

Non è poca cosa.
