Sei Miguel - Pedro Gomes: Turbina Anthem

Il dialogo fra i portoghesi Miguel e Gomes si svolge più su un sostanziale contrasto dinamico e timbrico che sull'integrazione fra voci complementari. La pocket trumpet di Miguel possiede una sonorità incerta e smorzata (forse derivata da certe inflessioni di Bill Dixon), che potrebbe nascondere un suo lirismo reticente, ma si basa, almeno in queste incisioni, su un fraseggio timido, assolutamente statico, fermo su soluzioni sempre uguali: note lunghe o brevi grappoli di note che si ripetono incessantemente. Il chitarrista invece espone una pronuncia molto più vasta, attinta da vari modelli, che alterna silenzi e sussulti tellurici, delicate sonorità acustiche e crudi agglomerati di rumorismi elettronici.

In queste improvvisazioni, registrate in studio a Lisbona nell'agosto 2008 ed edite in cinquecento copie, si realizza quindi un incontro fra approcci opposti, quasi una contrastata fotografia in bianco e nero. Nell'accidentato percorso, in cui la musica materializza atmosfere prevalentemente scontrose e grevi, a tratti inquietanti, si stagliano quattro episodi più distesi, accomunati dallo stesso spunto tematico: in particolare il canone "The Pale Star II," "The Pale Star III - Imaginary Grass" e "The Pale Star V - firmamento". In questi casi l'andamento melodico si fa sereno e pacificato, di ascendenza quasi neo-folk: sono appunto questi i momenti più originali nell'impostazione, e più convincenti nei risultati, di tutto il CD.
