Markus Reuter (featuring Fabio Trentini and Asaf Sirkis): Truce <3

When German touch guitarist Markus Reuter first united with fretless bassist Fabio Trentini and drummer Asaf Sirkis for their debut album, Truce (MoonJune/Unsung Records, 2020), they established a power trio that defied conventional boundaries. The core concept was simple: three masters of their instruments, no pre-composed material and complete trust in the moment.

The group's methodology, creating music spontaneously without charts, demands absolute proficiency. On this album, they anticipate one another's next move flawlessly. They are not just three virtuosos sharing a stage; they operate as a single organism with three brains and six limbs. It is enough to make lesser improvisers consider a career change.

Truce 3 is an explosive album that detonates on first contact and refuses to stop burning. Recorded live in the studio with no pre-written material, the album captures pure improvisation at its most dangerous and exhilarating. The opening salvo, "Not Alone," immediately sets this high-stakes environment. Reuter's unique touch guitar unleashes intricate, cascading textures over Trentini's singing fretless lines, while Sirkis establishes a hypnotic groove that is both propulsive and spacious.

The emotional and sonic range of the band is fully displayed on "We Have Your Back." The dynamic shifts are breathtaking, exploding from delicate ambient shimmer into bone-crushing, piledriver-like intensity. Reuter's ability to transition from crystalline beauty via memorable hooks to absolute sonic mayhem is the linchpin of this transformation. Trentini's bass consistently transcends its supportive role, acting as a true co-lead instrument engaged in a complex, counter-melodic dance with Reuter's guitar. He also dishes out wily riffs, supporting Reuter's exhilarating leads as the trio fades into infinity for the closeout.

This delicate balance between firepower and vulnerability is crucial. Sirkis's drumming is particularly noteworthy here, featuring nuanced, atmospheric cymbal work and a gargantuan sound. "Guardian Shadow" arrives like a freight train, delivering an ominous tone with polyrhythmic complexity and astonishing precision, yet never feeling academic or cold. Elsewhere, the tracks continue to push boundaries. "Shuffled Fate," the album closer, is steeped in mystical storylines, a mid-tempo gait, enhanced by Sirkis' pumping grooves and revved up by Reuter's cosmic rampage.

Ultimately, what is most remarkable about this band is its ability to chart new instrumental territory while maintaining emotional coherence. These pieces move far beyond simple technical exercises—there is a profound feeling here. If you are looking for safe, predictable prog rock, look elsewhere. Therefore, if you want to hear high-level instrumental improvisation managed by experts, Truce 3 is essential listening: definitive proof that calling a truce means entering a new, exciting phase of musical invention.
