Il terzo disco del pianista cubano scoperto da Charlie Haden conferma il sodalizio col produttore Quincy Jones e la permanenza nell'etichetta di Detroit. Dopo l'acclamato Sound of Space, legato alla tradizione musicale della sua isola e l'eccellente conferma in The Invasion Parade, intriso di riferimenti etnici e classici, Rodriguez amplia notevolmente la prospettiva.
Il disco prende il nome dall'uccello simbolo di Cuba, che non sopravvive in gabbia ed è visto come simbolo di libertà. Il pianista intende esprimerla nella connessione con altre musiche, nuovi partner, dando particolare attenzione alla dimensione vocale.

Con lui troviamo il cantante e polistrumentista del Camerun Richard Bona, il trombettista libanese Ibrahim Maalouf, la cantante indiana Ganavya Doraiswamy, il cantante spagnolo Antonio Lizana, il duo vocale franco-cubano Ibeyi, formato dalle gemelle Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz che cantano in lingua Yoruba. Ne risulta un album composito, che inizia con la fantasiosa rielaborazione di "Chan Chan," il noto successo del Buena Vista Social Club e prosegue spaziando dal flamenco di "Gitanerias" al tango di Astor Piazzolla "Adiós Nonino" fino alla disinvolta reinterpretazione del corale di Johann Sebastian Bach "Jesu, Joy on Man's Desiring" ovvero l'ultimo movimento di "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147." I brani sono tutti arrangiati da Rodriguez che ha aggiunto cinque di sua composizione.

Un percorso variopinto con accattivanti arrangiamenti e melodie cantabili, dove il pianismo di Rodriguez non è mai pieno protagonista, assumendo un ruolo di guida e abbellimento. A differenza dei dischi precedenti, spesso graffianti e intensi, la musica scorre con grande piacevolezza ma resta su una dimensione epidermica, senza colpire troppo.
