Ralph Towner: Timeline

I dischi di Ralph Towner per sola chitarra si sono fatti più frequenti nel tempo, come se la dimensione intima ad essi collegata fosse diventata quella privilegiata, e la presenza di altri musicisti con cui confrontarsi non più necessaria. Successivo ad Ana e ad Anthem, questo Time Line ne prosegue la linea, con composizioni originali eseguite alla chitarra classica (o alla 12 corde) mescolate ad alcuni standard.

Ogni disco di Towner è una dimostrazione di stile che non ha eguali, e lo conferma maestro indiscusso della chitarra. La sua tecnica strumentale, al servizio di uno straordinario lirismo compositivo, ha raggiunto un grado di raffinatezza incredibile, riuscendo a mescolare la tecnica classica con il senso dello swing jazzistico, l'abilità improvvisativa con il gusto per i temi melodici, la ricchezza delle armonizzazioni con la complessità dei ritmi. La sua è grande musica, che travalica i confini tra i generi, rendendo inutile qualunque distinzione, da ascoltare più e più volte centellinando la bellezza di ogni singola nota, nessuna delle quali risulta superflua o inessenziale.

Inutile cercare di stilare un ordine di preferenza tra i brani, tutti assolutamente meravigliosi; basti segnalare "If", tenera ballata già nel repertorio degli ultimi Oregon, o i due standard presenti, "Come Rain or Come Shine" e "My Man's Gone Now", che rivelano nella scelta e nell'arrangiamento la sua ammirazione per Bill Evans, nel cui repertorio sono rimasti a lungo. O ancora "Freeze Frame", brillante escursione alla 12-corde insieme alla ricordata "My Man's Gone Now", ribadendo il suo personalissimo approccio a uno strumento ancora poco utilizzato.

Imperdibile.
