Formazione stellare quella che Drew Gress presenta per il suo debutto sull'etichetta tedesca Pirouet, e quintetto consolidato fin dal lontano 2005 quando impressionò con l'ottimo 7 Black Butterflies . Formazione di musicisti avventurosi, spinti da un insaziabile spirito di ricerca, seppur con prospettive e gradi differenti di intensità, che... sembra incappare, se non in un esercizio di stile, sicuramente in un compitino ben fatto, senza sbavature, dove tutto funziona a meraviglia, scorre liscio come l'olio e ogni cosa è sotto controllo.

Parliamo di ottime composizioni, di arrangiamenti adeguati che utilizzano un ampio ventaglio espressivo, melodie accattivanti. Ma tutto ciò sembra comprimere in qualche modo, se non addirittura inibire, lo spirito più creativo dei protagonisti. Insomma nonostante assoli ineccepibili ed un buon lavoro d'insieme in The Sky Inside non si accende veramente la scintilla, il quintetto naviga ad una comoda velocità di crociera, le accelerazioni sono scarse, e ancor di più gli improvvisi cambi di marcia o le deviazioni.

Non mancano naturalmente momenti di particolare interesse, soprattutto quando Craig Taborn riesce a liberare la sua sapienza pianistica, ma l'amaro in bocca per aspettative in gran parte disattese fatica ad abbandonare l'ascoltatore.
