Sophie Duner Quartet: The Rain in Spain

La risposta della CIMP e di Bob Rush alla Blue Note e Norah Jones si chiama Sophie Duner! Dopo tanto free e improv arriva sulla CIMP un personaggio speciale con una propria visione musicale al di là dei generi: una cantante svedese vicina alla quarantina e che fino adesso non aveva mai inciso. Forse è una battuta, forse no, fatto sta che dopo un primo approccio nel 1996, che non aveva convinto il produttore americano, Sophie Duner non si perse di coraggio e con altre canzoni si è ripresentata alla stessa casa discografica anni dopo svegliando questa volta un pò di interesse verso il proprio lavoro.

Con una formazione insolita - chitarra elettrica, contrabbasso, le innumerevoli percussioni di Kahlil Kwame Bell, uno che ha lavorato con la citata Norah Jones - fa quella che Bob Rush definisce come "Good music is good music" e che sfugge a tutte le definizioni, una musica crossover che viene ben eseguita da un quartetto messo insieme per l'occasione. Il chitarrista Rory Stuart è moto bravo e dare una veste jazz alla voce ed ad arrangiare con gusto le canzoni scritte dalla Duner, alcune delle quali dalla struttura tipicamente pop, come "The Rain in Spain" e "The Fight", ma che ben reggono il confronto con i pochi standards scelti selezionati.

Lei è una cantante originale ed una compositrice di valore, che scrive testi che tutto sono fuorché banali e che ha il pregio di saperli mettere nella giusta luce. Si resta sorpresi dalla facilità con cui tutto scorre in un miscuglio di stili - senza farne nessuno proprio, neanche il blues finale - come ormai d'uso, in un disco che si ascolta volentieri più volte lasciando sempre una buona impressione.
