Joe McPhee - Dominic Duval: The Open Door
Compagni di avventura in una quantità enorme di registrazioni con tutti i nomi più importanti della scena creativa statunitense, i due si trovano a meraviglia attraverso un interplay telepatico e reciprocamente stimolante. Certo, se vogliamo, l’unica presenza tangibile della figura di McLean sta nel timbro nasale, leggermente screziato, spesso al limite della tonalità del sax alto di Joe McPhee.
Per il resto la musica è 100% McPhee/Duval, settantacinque minuti di libera improvvisazione. Ci sono è vero i titoli e si sentono gli applausi tra un brano e l’altro - il disco è registrato dal vivo alla Casa del popolo di Montreal - ma The Open Door è una lunga, ininterrotta conversazione tra due spiriti liberi. A volte a prevalere è il tono malinconico, riflessivo, a volte saettano dardi infuocati o acuminate rasoiate sonore.
E sulla copertina del CD i due protagonisti fotografati nell’atto di un brindisi, sembrano proprio festeggiare la buona riuscita della registrazione.
