David Haney Trio: The Music

Il "jazz da camera" ha avuto uno dei suoi migliori momenti con il trio di Paul Bley insieme a Steve Swallow e Jimmy Giuffre e quasi non stupisce che sia un altro pianista canadese, David Haney, a proseguire sulla stessa via e con lo stesso tipo di formazione, insieme al trombonista Julian Priester.

Questa seduta di registrazione per la CIMP è stata preceduta da numerosi scambi di opinioni e di demo con il produttore. Dopo anni di prove, ascolti, telefonate, finalmente si è arrivati all'incisione, trovando disponibile il contrabbassista Adam Lane, subito in sintonia con gli altri due.

La cultura occidentale traspare senza grosse mascheramenti dietro le note del pianista e l'insieme appare un riuscito incontro di sonorità classiche e jazz, di ritmi insoliti e di elementi più usuali come il blues. Il suo approccio all'improvvisazione è descritto dal leader con una simpatica metafora: qualsiasi scimmia può buttar giù una linea, il vero problema sta nel dare vita e movimento a melodia, ritmo, dinamica fra i musicisti risultando originali. Se questo è il suo intento non gli si può che dare ragione.

La sua Music appare poco famiiare, una musica totale con elementi di jazz e classicismi, di intellettualismi, aforismi, improvvisazioni e note eterodosse.
