Questo cofanetto contiene 4 CD e un bel libretto con un saggio di Paul Watts e informazioni molto dettagliate sui 101 brani contenuti nei dischetti argentati. Sono i pezzi registrati in quel decennio abbondante che va dal 1949 al 1962 dal mitico bluesman John Lee Hooker e pubblicati dalle etichette Modern, Chess e Vee-Jay. Una collezione imperdibile per apprezzare al meglio le radici di un blues viscerale e puro che poi avrà enorme influenza nello sviluppo della musica giovanile delle decadi successive.

Hooker ci offre la sua voce, la sua chitarra, il suo respiro, la sua energia per raccontare in presa diretta un mondo che si sta muovendo velocemente per ritornare sulla strada del progresso dopo i terribili anni della seconda guerra mondiale. Il chitarrista nato a Clarksdale (Mississippi) nel 1917, lo fa con il solito impeto che gli è congeniale, incurante delle regole, degli schemi, delle battute. Proprio per questo, specialmente nella prima parte della sua carriera (e nella prima parte di queste registrazioni) è quasi sempre da solo di fronte al microfono, con la sua chitarra e la sua personalità prorompente. Poi questa perfetta solitudine si smorzerà un po' con l'ingresso di un altro chitarrista come Eddie Kirkland e altri bravi compagni di strada, abili ad accompagnarlo e ad assecondarlo. Perché John Lee Hooker è come un torrente in piena e nessuna barriera lo può arrestare. Il suo ritmo è ripetitivo, ipnotico, incalzante. Non puoi non lasciarti andare, non puoi non cominciare a ballare.

Non ci sono sorprese particolari, gli incontri con la scena del rock arriveranno una decina di anni dopo, qui il blues è ancora allo stato di diamante grezzo, bello e scintillante, incurante delle imperfezioni formali. Ci sono tutti i brani famosi di John Lee Hooker, a cominciare da quel "Boom Boom" che farà la sua fortuna e verrà ripreso nei primi anni sessanta in Inghilterra dagli Yardbirds di un imberbe Eric Clapton. Ma non possiamo non citare anche "Boogie Chillum," "Sally Mae," "Crawlin King Snake," "Queen Bee," "Ground Hog Blues," "Key to the Highway" e le altre mille variazione del boogie blues tipico di questo splendido artista.
