Anthony Pirog: The Hunger Artist
Anthony Pirog's The Hunger Artist is a sprawling, bold opus that defies easy categorization. This sonic collision of jazz, rock, and experimental music is a semi-chaotic beauty that rewards the adventurous listener with its sheer unpredictability. Pirog, a guitar alchemist known for his boundary-pushing artistry, delivers a mesmerizing work that is less a collection of songs and more a journey through the looking glass of sound.

The guitarist has previously conjured aural magic with cellist Janel Leppin and The Messthetics band, amid other projects and session work. Pirog deepens his exploration here, crafting a complex and thought-provoking journey that is both electrifying and challenging.

This album is a testament to the guitar's expressive power, with Pirog's playing serving as a whirlwind of emotion that is both intimate and intense—a rollercoaster that demands not just attention, but an emotional investment. His guitar voice, a shapeshifting entity, effortlessly transitions from an ethereal whisper to a guttural roar, evoking a spectrum of feelings amid his psychedelic/jazz fusion ventures morphed into free-form escapades. His improvisations are a thrilling blend of meticulous calculation and raw spontaneity, revealing a deep, fearless exploration of the instrument's immense potential.

The album's eponymous opener is a sprawling extravaganza that feels like a musical feast for the senses. With a large orchestra, Pirog's otherworldly guitar weaves through a richly layered tapestry of sound, abetted by the electronic wizardry of Chris Videll and Chester Hawkins and the fiery trumpet of Rob Mazurek. The result is a grandiose and almost ritualistic soundscape that builds to a hypnotic crescendo, like an Eastern mantra for the sonically adventurous.

In stark contrast, "Bleed" is a free-form maelstrom of raw energy, a wild and untamed beast of a track that makes the average thrash metal song sound like a lullaby. Pirog unleashes a fiery guitar onslaught, while Jarrett Gilgore's saxophone screams with manic intensity. Leppin, drummer Jason Nazary and bassist Luke Stewart join the fray as a rhythm section that propels the music forward with relentless, unyielding force. It is like witnessing the unfiltered birth of a new sonic universe, one that is exhilaratingly unpredictable and sentient.

The Hunger Artist demands a deeply committed listener—this is not casual background music. Pirog's audacious vision, coupled with the musicians' collective virtuosity and adventurous spirit, creates a listening experience that is as challenging as it is rewarding—like running a marathon where the finish line keeps moving, but in a good way.
