Dave Kane's Rabbit Project: The Eye of the Duck

Serio, solare, intelligente, ecco un bell'esempio della più recente new way del British Jazz contemporaneo.

Dave Kane è da anni sotto la lente d'ingrandimento dei più attenti critici del pianeta jazz, sia da quando ha creato la Lima Orchestra (Lima=Leeds Improvised Music Association) con collegata realtà dedita alla ricerca, che in qualità di primattore di molti interessanti piccoli progetti associati a nomi quali quelli di Steve Davis, Matthew Bourne, James Allsop e Tim Giles. Ma è proprio con e da questo quintetto chissà perché dedicato al coniglio che il bassista nord-irlandese, da anni ormai di stanza a Leeds ed attivo specialmente in terra di Scozia, che arrivano prove decisamente convincenti.

The Eye of the Duck promuove pienamente la figura di Kane, sino ad oggi riconosciuto innanzitutto quale valente improvvisatore, anche nel difficile campo della composizione e dell'arrangiamento. Sistematici riconoscimenti di stima stanno giungendo nel quartier generale della Edition, label gallese capace di dare filo da torcere a rinomate etichette londinesi che sembravano avere il perfetto e completo monopolio della scena "new jazz" autoctona.

Il lavoro del quintetto, che vede accanto al leader il già citato Bourne al Fender Rhodes (uno strumento prepotentemente tornato di moda da almeno 2-3 anni ma forse mai davvero scomparso dagli strumentari delle band alternative inglesi), Joost Hendricks alla batteria, Simon Kaylor al tenore e Simon Beddoe alla tromba, è ricco di doti e qualità, abbracciando un largo spettro di forme e stili del contemporaneo "jazz thinking".

Più in dettaglio, le strutture improvvisative sono bilanciate con quelle compositive e l'ascolto rivela buone capacità di interplay generale. Dinamiche frasi dei due fiati risultano sistematicamente sorrette da un drumming attento e preciso e da un energetico quanto corretto appoggio ritmico del basso. Feeling!, si diceva una volta cercando di aggettivare con sicurezza, band del genere. Squisiti e rimarchevoli i sound di "The Gorman," ricco di echi nordafricani e di dialogati contrappunti fiatistici, e di "Sad Song," frutto di un tranquillo gioco essenziale fra basso e piano elettrico, mentre "The Only Way" promuove ottime idee free di Kane che probabilmente piacerebbero molto a Tim Berne ma anche al Fripp dei migliori King Crimson legati alla "disciplina". Assolutamente belli ed intelligenti anche i brani che chiudono il CD, corali come l'aperto "Slip" o in virtuosa solitudine come il conclusivo solo di "Loulou's Theme" firmato da Kane.

In ultima analisi un disco sicuramente bello, ben bilanciato, coerente e logico come per fortuna diverse tra le ultime produzioni di un "contemporary jazz" che proprio in terra d'Albione sembra aver trovato nuova fortuna.
