Ray Mantilla: The Connection

In primo piano su The Connection troviamo il vibrante latin jazz che Ray Mantilla pratica con successo sin dagli anni '50. La formula è quella consolidata, ma grazie a Mantilla è possibile coglierne le radici più profonde. Significativa è in tal senso la superba traccia sette per sole percussioni, dove il virtuosismo del leader intreccia i pattern ritmici portoricani con quelli brasiliani.

La vitalità di questo settetto è ben percepibile, anche se non sostenuta da temi memorabili. Oltre alla sontuose decorazioni ritmiche del leader si impone l'eloquio raffinato del multistrumentista Enrique Fernandez, grazie ad un seducente timbro mai scontato. Eccellente anche il sax contralto di Willie Williams nello sfoderare sonorità in bilico tra la matrice latinoamericana ed il jazz. Le dieci tracce mettono in mostra la verve di una pratica musicale sanguigna ed incisiva, ma non sorprendente. Ma la comunicativa sprigionata dal gruppo rende gradevole l'ascolto del CD. A partire dal mambo "Andean Fantasy" è tutta una fucina di ritmi, che gli appassionati del latin jazz non mancheranno di apprezzare. Da non perdere la riproposizione del cavallo di battaglia del leader, "Blues for Ray" in chiusura del disco.
