Tony Malaby: The Cave of Winds

Nel lontano 2000 il sassofonista Tony Malaby debuttò discograficamente come leader di un super quartetto denominato Sabino. A distanza di più di vent'anni ripropone la stessa formula con il chitarrista originale Marc Ducret sostituito da Ben Monder—collaboratore di lunga data di Malaby—e licenzia un disco di tutto rispetto. Vi troviamo le diverse anime che da anni contraddistinguono il percorso musicale di Malaby. Il suo districarsi con naturalezza tra tradizione e innovazione, l'interesse per le forme folkloriche ed il coinvolgimento nella galassia della libera improvvisazione, la personalità discreta ma decisiva sia come collaboratore che come leader, il tutto caratterizzato da uno stile e da un suono facilmente riconoscibile.

E così «Corinthian Leather» ha spirito boppistico, incedere spigliato e stimolanti contrappunti tra sax tenore e chitarra; «Recrudence» è esplorazione timbrica allo stato puro, rarefazione sonora ondivaga e poco rassicurante; la chitarra noise conduce «Scratch the Horse» nei meandri oscuri di un jazz heavy metal; «Insect Ward» è tutta volteggi acrobatici del sax soprano senza rete di protezione.

Ma è la title track, diciotto minuti abbondanti, il brano più intrigante e misterioso. Una melodia appena accennata sembra condurre il brano in territori più concilianti rispetto al climax complessivo dell'album, ma è un falso indizio. Gradualmente l'atmosfera si sgrana, colorazioni oscure compaiono qua e là, la narrazione si scompone in cellule tematiche e ritmiche spesso rarefatte, a volte angolose, fino all'incendiarsi improvviso della materia sonora prima della quiete (apparente) finale. Gran affresco!
