Loren Stillman: The Brother's Breakfast

Nel precedente, quasi contemporaneo It Could Be Anything, Loren Stillman, ex enfante terrible del sax contralto, aveva manifestato la propria maestria di compositore e solista con una delle formazioni più classiche del jazz moderno, ossia piano trio più fiato solista. In questo The Brother’s Breakfast, Stillman mescola le carte: mantiene Jeff Hirshfield alla batteria, sostituisce il pianoforte con l’organo hammond affidato alle sapienti mani di Gary Versace, introduce la chitarra di Vic Juris al posto del contrabbasso.

Il risultato è un lavoro meno sofisticato del precedente, con l’attenzione rivolta principalmente alla ricerca di piacevoli impasti timbrici, alla creazione di atmosfere rilassate e sognanti, con brani strutturati in maniera più lineare e ritmicamente regolari. Non mancano situazioni in cui le cose si ingarbugliano un po’ grazie a qualche dialogo serrato, a qualche impennata solistica, al ravvivarsi della propulsione ritmica, ma sostanzialmente il mood del CD si mantiene nei limiti di una pacata conversazione.

Grazie anche ad una scelta precisa dei musicisti: Versace privilegia i suoni liquidi e poco aggressivi del suo B3, Hirshfield vola leggero con la batteria, Juris armonizza delicatamente con toni caldi e pastosi e Stillman risulta ancora più cool del solito nel suo fraseggio naturalmente rilassato.
