David Krakauer: The Big Picture

Il tema di questo album, come il titolo fa intendere, è la musica da film. Il materiale, ovviamente rimodulato in stile-Krakauer, proviene, in ordine di apparizione, da Cabaret di Bob Fosse (musica di John Kander), ovviamente La vita è bella di Benigni (e Piovani), Midnight in Paris, Radio Days e Amore e guerra di Woody Allen (Bechet, Green e Prokofiev gli autori), Il pianista di Roman Polanski (Wojciech Kilar), Avalon di Barry Levinson (Randy Newman), Lenny ancora di Fosse (Ralph Burns), La scelta di Sophie di Alan Pakula (Marvin Hamlisch), The Producers (alias Per favore non toccate le vecchiette) di Mel Brooks (sue le musiche), Funny Girl di William Wyler (Jules Styne) e in ultimo dal musical Fiddle on the Roof di Norman Jewison (Jerry Bock).

Il clima è ovviamente molto calato nel popolare, con esecuzioni magistrali (qua e là anche sfocianti nel virtuosistico, com'è del resto in uso chez David Krakauer; qui, tuttavia, senza strafare), atmosfere grasse, godibilità assicurata. Non mancano episodi più composti, tipo l'elegante "Body and Soul" che occupa il centro del trittico alleniano, o, ancora, "Moving to the Ghetto," in linea con la drammaticità di quanto evocato, e lo stesso "The Family," senza dimenticare il balladistico "Keep It Gay" e, subito dopo, "People," di vaghe trasudazioni paolocontiane.

Un disco gratificante e ottimamente suonato, in conclusione, con qualche manierismo e magari anche qualche eccesso (entrambi del tutto fisiologici, conoscendo il personaggio), ma di assoluta sostanza musicale.
