Federico Casagrande: The Ancient Battle of the Invisible

Nel precedente Spirit of the Mountains, Federico Casagrande ci aveva deliziato conun'idea di guitar-trio piuttosto lontana da esasperati tecnicismi e da rutilanti effetti speciali, puntando piuttosto sulla capacità di tradurre idee musicali attraverso la ricerca di un suono e di un pensiero personale. Questo The Ancient Battle of the Invisible prosegue idealmente il sentiero allora tracciato rimanendo nel campo di battaglia di un jazz dalla forte impronta melodica, reso affascinante dalla capacità di intrecciare e combinare in maniera originale i ruoli strumentali. Grazie anche ad un senso arioso degli arrangiamenti in grado di portare in superficie la bellezza delle piccole cose e dei piccoli gesti in un contesto di grande ricchezza espressiva.

Significativa a questo proposito l'aggiunta, alle dinamiche del trio, del vibrafono di Jeff Davis, giovane musicista canadese dalle assidue frequentazioni classiche. Le schermaglie tra il suono a volte ovattato a volte cristallino della sei corde del leader e le tonalità aristocratiche delle lamelle di metallo percosse da Davis costituiscono una ulteriore pennellata cromatica all'affresco immaginifico creato da Casagrande. La ritmica frastagliata di Simon Tailleu al contrabbasso e Gautier Garrigue alla batteria è decisiva nell'allontanare il quartetto dal rischio di una eccessiva omogeneità/uniformità. The Ancient Battle of the Invisible si adagia così su un senso di calma apparente, uno scorrere senza ansia degli eventi che nasconde tra le righe leggere inquietudini che rendono vibrante la registrazione.
