Groove's Mood: The Aggregation

Eddie Allen è un marpione, nel senso buono del termine. Suona la tromba, compone e insegna jazz. Si diverte a metter su quartetti, quintetti e una big band di 17 elementi, The Aggregation, capace di guardare allo swing più puro ("Groove's Mood"), ma anche ai riverberi latino americani. Aggregare per lui è segno di non solo di un perfetto interplay con i tantissimi musicisti che lo circondano, ma anche e soprattutto con l'ascoltatore che lui vuole, senza mezzi termini, coinvolgere sfrenatamente.

Per questa ragione nel Groove's Mood non disdegna di guardare al passato del jazz più divertente (dell'effervescente title track abbiamo già detto), agli incontri caldi a ritmo di bossa ("Brasilia"), al soul, R&B più lirico (la coverizzazione a ritmo di samba del classico di Stevie Wonder, "You Are the Sunshine of My Love," ma anche nella versione exotica di "My Cherie Amour"), alle ballad più soffuse ("Tenderly").

Non c'è solo divertimento, ma anche riflessione e il trombettista non trascura il passato di sofferenza degli afroamericani. "The Black Coming" è una composizione in quattro movimenti che descrive la memoria di schiavitù passate e moderne con un occhio a Duke Ellington.

Poi c'è spazio anche per un tributo al pianista James Williams ("The Soulful Mister Timmons") e al mito del trombettista Freddie Hubbard ("Sky Dive").

Un CD di raffinatezze che seppur declinate al passato, non stanca l'ascolto ma lo rallegra.
