Una simbiosi che raggiunge lo zenith sulla prima traccia del disco, l'illusoria “Between Here and Everywhere”, un abbraccio tra Erik Satie e Thelonius Monk in cui l’introspezione pianistica viene riportata alla concretezza più materiale da un filtro rumoroso e greve.
Già perchè Telephone Popcorn si rivela sin dall'inizio un disco basato su strutture armoniche molto solide nella loro costruzione di accordi sospesi, lungo la quale, a “disturbare” il più consueto procedimento “orizzontale”, ci sono le distorsioni ad opera di Brown.
Un'aperta battaglia di libertà tra il suono del piano e la freddezza sintetica dell’elettronica domina anche nel collage armonico di "Dogstar" e nella title tack. Una contrapposizione che tra i due insiste anche nella bellissima e orientaleggiante “Escape From Tomorrowland”: improvvisazione per batteria midi e piano che ha una sorta di tema iniziale orientaleggiante e monolitico, basato su una ripetizione solo leggermente modulata di quattro misure di accordi.
Anche se il duo e la sua creatività sono alimentati da un dialogo talvolta troppo frammentario, la contraddizione come paradosso irrinunciabile è il profondo tratto saliente che riesce a rendere interessante anche questo lavoro di Shipp.
