Patty Waters

Born: March 11, 1946

PATTY WATERS must be acknowledged as a vocalist who has tested the limits of the human voice's capabilities. Since her brief recording career in the mid-'6O's, she has come to be appreciated as a vocal innovator not just in jazz but in contemporary music as a whole. Much of her repertoire was given over to hushed piano solo ballads in which her voice could fade to a whisper that was barely audible, but what really attracted attention were her avant-garde outings in which she stretched and mutated her voice with contorted shrieks and wails that could be downright blood-curdling. She was heard in a nightclub in the early '6O's by Albert Ayler, who recommended her to the ESP label; the first side of her 1965 debut recording ("Sings") was given over entirely to self-composed solo piano miniatures, leaving listeners somewhat unprepared for the second side, which consisted solely of her 13-minute interpretation of "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair." Building into hair-raising screams and vocal improvisations, it remains the performance for which she is most noted

Altamease Nelson

Born: November 15, 1953

Raised in Detroit, Michigan. Studied voice in New York at the Third Street Music Settlement and with Carlotta Wilson. Sang at several well known New York venues, i.e. Casablanca, Small's Paradise, Broadway Lounge, Catch a Rising Star. Returned to Detroit, Michigan in 1981 and continued music career singing at Baker's Keyboard Lounge and MGM Grand Casino-Detroit. Have been compared to the late great Sarah Vaughan.

Joy Bellis

Growing up in a small town in rural eastern Pennsylvania, Joy Bellis always had dreams of performing in New York City. It was a couple hours drive away, but close in her heart. A bright, young student who always did well academically, Joy’s first love remained anything related to music. She began dance lessons at age 3 and piano lessons at age 8. Through both of these disciplines she discovered her passion for singing. In her teen years, performing in musical theater productions solidified her dedication to the craft. Even as she went away to college in Virginia at James Madison University to study Financial Engineering, Joy kept up her musical pursuits as well, performing at various functions whenever she could. Joy moved to Manhattan for a job in the investment banking world, but she knew this was a vehicle to get her closer to that place where she could also make her singing dreams happen

Tina Phillips

Tina Phillips is a respected Jazz artist and songwriter based in the Denver region. Influenced most by Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughn, Charlie Parker and her dear friend Art Lande, her style is versatile - including straight ahead, bebop, blues, and Latin Jazz. Her charismatic on-stage performance is the finishing touch. Tina, a Denver native, attended the University of Colorado as a vocal performance major. She is a highly respected vocal coach, clinician, award winning billboard songwriter and performed as the vocalist in the Young Audience Jazz Band, performing with internationally known jazz musicians, Art Lande, Paul Warburton and Bruno Carr.
