Susanna Wallumrod

"Dad's idols growing up were Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald, but I was influenced by a wider range of musical styles," James explains. "I had my dad's era and everything that's come out since to draw from. Because of that I am a different singer from my father, even if there is a lot of him in me."

Shahida Nurullah

Shahida Nurullah has a right to sing the blues. Considering she lost both her parents as a teenager, raised her brother when she was practically a child herself, and suffered debilitating injuries in an accident that nearly ended her life.

She sings the blues so beautifully.

She also sings jazz, samba, bossa nova, show tunes, and more. Her vocal talent surpasses the challenge of any music in the popular American songbook. Not to mention challenging the language barrier to sing in three different languages. Her skill has wowed audiences from her native Detroit to New York to Paris to Amsterdam and further.

Jesse Palter

During the 2020 lockdown while sidelined from gigging and regular income streams, Jesse Palter was determined to stay in a positive mindset. She engaged by putting a home recording rig together so that she could record a few singles about the pandemic. Reaching out to her friend Jake Bass, they did some virtual collaborating and put the finishing touches on two of her soulful and upbeat infectious tracks, “Better Days” and “2020 Vision.”

She also realized that Nothing Standard, her swinging, soulful retrospective jazz album that was sidelined when she signed with Artistry Music/Mack Avenue, needed to come out. At the time, the label chose to launch her as a pop/rock artist. Jesse is proud of her 2019 album Paper Trail and considers it “a huge part of my musical journey.” But free now from the confines of a label machine, she reveals her innermost truths as the talented jazz vocalist and songwriter that she’s always been.

Kaye Roze

When Kaye sings, she tells the story from her heart. In the spirit of Judy Garland, she loves to entertain and is at her best in front of an audience. Her wide vocal range allows her to manipulate her voice to sound like anything she wants from a packing a wallop on a gutsy blues or energetic swing tune to a passionate ballad to classical high tones or the voice of a 16 year old. Gail Pettis

Gail Pettis is a remarkably original song stylist who does not bring to mind Billie or Ella or Sarah or any other vocalist, past or present. In jazz, she found an ideal outlet for expressing herself as an individual. “It feels like I’ve been looking for this all my life,” she explains. “Jazz invites you to be yourself, and that really appeals to me. You’re not required to sound like anyone else nor do you ever have to sing a song the same way twice. Jazz only asks that you live in the moment. That is tremendously freeing.” Gail was born in Henderson, Kentucky, on May 30, 1958 and grew up in Gary, Indiana

Mandy Burry

Born: January 16, 1974

Residing in downtown Amherst, MA, Mandy served her town and community for several years as a Head Start teacher and labor union leader until choosing to study jazz and African-American music at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2005. After participating in Jazz In July Summer Music Programs at UMASS in 2006 and 2007, Mandy became the assistant director of the program, serving as the acting director for the 2008 summer session. Mandy is currently writing her own music and lyrics, performing locally, and collaborating with talented local musicians and DJs. She recently formed Pepper's Hygrade, a company designed to promote local music, musicians, and venues through flyering, flyer design, networking, and merchandising.
