L.A. Jazz Choir

When the L.A. Jazz Choir was founded in 1978 by Dr. Gerald Eskelin, no one anticipated that its very first album, Listen, would be nominated for a Grammy in the Best Jazz Vocal Group Performance category, but when two years later its second album, From All Sides, was also nominated, the L.A. Katie Elevitch

Born: December 7, 1972

KATIE ELEVITCH is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and band leader who fearlessly forges a sound straight from the Source; Her songs and live shows lure you into a sonic devotional journey across sensual landscapes of rock, soul, folk and jazz that carry you into meditations on longing, loss, liberation, the spiritual state of the universe, and the transcendence of love. Imogene Lynn

Born: 1922

Vocalist Imogene Lynn began her career singing in society orchestras, including that of Emerson Gill. In 1942 she joined Ray McKinley's new band, where she became a featured singer, recording such tunes as ''Big Boy'' and ''Who Wouldn't Love You.'' She was married to McKinley's clarinetist Mahlon Clark, later staff musician with the Paramount Studio Orchestra and the Lawrence Welk Show. In 1944 Lynn went to work for Artie Shaw, providing vocals on several songs, most notably 'Ac-cent- tchu-ate the Positive.'' She remained with Shaw for two years

Sade

Born: January 16, 1959

February 2010: Soldier of Love is released, the sixth studio album the band Sade have released during their 25 year career, and the first since Lovers Rock in 2000. For Sade herself, as the lynchpin of the group’s song writing effort, it’s a simple matter of integrity and authenticity: “I only make records when I feel I have something to say. I’m not interested in releasing music just for the sake of selling something. Sade is not a brand”. The call went out in 2008 for the group to re-convene at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studios, in the countryside of south west England. It was the first time the four principals had met up since the Lovers Rock tour wrapped in 2001

Gillian Harwin

Born: January 8, 1974

Californian turned New Yorker Gillian Harwin is a songwriter, producer, arranger, band leader, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. She sings in multiple languages and accompanies herself playing either guitar or upright bass. She otherwise entertains by playing the ukulele, musical saw, or tel avi and has even been known to do a nose flute or kazoo solo. She graduated with a degree in classical vocal performance although her true passion is for singing jazz, Latin, soul, R&B and the blues. After years of paying dues singing in smoky blues bars and searching for “the vibe”, she shares her voice, vision and depth with the release of her debut album, Whiskey Sandwich

Marilyn Monroe

Born: June 1, 1926

Norma Jeane Mortenson, better known as Marilyn Monroe was a Golden Globe Award-winning American Hollywood legend, movie star, actress, singer, model and pop icon. She became known for her comedic skills and screen presence, going on to become one of the most popular movie stars of the 1950s. Later in her career, she worked towards serious roles with a measure of success. However, long-standing problems were exacerbated by disappointments in both her career and personal life during her later years. Her death has been subject to speculation and conspiracy theories. Gal Costa

Born: September 26, 1946

Essentially the first lady of Brazilian music, Gal Costa was among the musical rebels who gathered under the Tropicalia banner in the late-1960s/early-'70s, espousing a countercultural aesthetic that advanced Brazilian pop beyond bossa nova and samba into challenging new territory. Her big, bold style found her belting out melodies diva-style one moment and indulging in psychedelic, avant garde freakouts the next. In the '80s, like many of her peers, Costa switched to a slick, commercial pop sound, but by the '90s she started getting back to her roots, managing to work with one of her heroes, Antonio Carlos Jobim, shortly before his death.

Syncopation

The Boston Globe calls SYNCOPATION "the 21st Century Manhattan Transfer or Lambert, Hendricks and Ross" and it is easy to see why.  Like those legendary vocal groups, Syncopation performs jazz and pop music in four-part harmony with a style that is both timeless and up-to-the- minute. As an added treat, each of the singers also plays an instrument or two -- like trumpet, trombone, piano, and percussion -- providing the excitement of a band much larger in size.

You may have seen Syncopation on WBZ-TV singing with the Boston Pops on their 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular (2009). The group often performs with instrumental accompaniment of piano, bass and drums, but they are equally renowned for their a cappella singing, which has earned them regional and national awards from Harmony Sweepstakes.

In its inception, Syncopation was mentored by Cheryl Bentyne of the Manhattan Transfer.  Their first album, A New Dance, featured contributions from bebop trombone legend Phil Wilson, formidable jazz fusion trumpeter Tiger Okoshi, and Paul Stiller of the groundbreaking vocal group Vox One. After signing a record contract with Geneon Entertainment in Japan, Syncopation's album Of Blue was recorded in Tokyo with some of Japan's hottest jazz musicians such as pianist Satoru "Salt" Shionoya.

Maureen Mullaney

Originally from Saratoga Springs, New York, Maureen started studying the voice at 14. She earned a degree in Music: Vocal performance from SUNY College at Geneseo and went on to win a "Best Actress" New York State Theater Award for her role as Erzulie in Once On This Island in 2002. After moving to Washington DC, she made a transition to Jazz performance and has never looked back. Maureen can be seen at many of the East Coast's top jazz and blues venues. Sugar Pie DeSantos

Born: October 16, 1935

Sugar Pie DeSanto has been called the Queen of West Coast Blues and a legendary figure in the history of Bay Area blues and beyond. Sugar Pie DeSanto was born Umpeylia Marsema Balinton, October 16, 1935. Her African American mom and her Filipino dad are responsible for her good looks, talent and great voice. Her mother was a concert pianist and taught Umpeylia how to sing - as she did with all her 10 children. In the early 50s 19-year-old Umpeylia was discovered by Johnny Otis at a talent show. Otis is also responsible for Umpeylia's stage name as he named her "Little Miss Sugar Pie" (in reference to her height)
