Ludovico Granvassu's 2021 Sonic Delights

Jazz is not a competitive sport and “Best Ofs" are misnomers. End of the year listicles have no bearing on the artistic standing of the albums they include, or on those they neglect, just like a five star review doesn't make the album it graces any better than it already is. But, apparently, humans ...

Unscientific Italians: Frisellian Magic

Read "Unscientific Italians: Frisellian Magic" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

If Italian film director Nanni Moretti had been born in 1973 instead of 1953, he might well have set the iconic Vespa ride through the empty streets of a languid, mid-August Rome in Caro Diario against a Bill Frisell rather than a Keith Jarrett soundtrack. Because if every era is defined by a limited ...

Unscientific Italians: Play The Music Of Bill Frisell Vol. 1

Read "Play The Music Of Bill Frisell Vol. 1" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Few would argue against Bill Frisell's status as one of the most singular and influential guitarists/composers since around 1980. And yet, the Baltimore-born musician remains something of an enigma: easy to admire but a tad more difficult to pin down. Instantly recognizable from just a handful of notes, Frisell is, at the same time, a musical ...

This week we pay tribute to the late Mario Pavone, with an epic live set in which his majestic bass sound propelled the Thomas Chapin Trio into the stratosphere at the 1995 Newport Jazz Festival. The rest of the playlist revolves around modern jazz guitar, with two different ways to pay tribute to Bill Frisell, by ...

Unscientific Italians: Play the Music of Bill Frisell Vol.1

Read "Play the Music of Bill Frisell Vol.1" reviewed by Mario Calvitti

Unscientific Italians

Unscientific Italians is an 11-piece collective band dedicated to investigating the music of jazz luminary Bill Frisell, created by some of the most gifted performers and bandleaders on the Italian creative scene. Born in 2008 for a small feature of the Italian collective/label El Gallo Rojo at Centro D'Arte in Padova, this project went into hibernation for more than 10 years and came back in 2020, with a revised lineup and repertoire which led to the release of their first work ‘Unscientific Italians Plays the Music of Bill Frisell Vol.1’ released in May 2021 for HORA Records. Musically speaking, Unscientific Italians is not a tribute or an orchestral rendition of Frisell’s music, but rather an idiosyncratic rewriting and orchestration that borrows his compositional and instrumental language. UNSCIENTIFIC ITALIANS Mirco Rubegni trumpet, flugelhorn, french horn Fulvio Sigurtà trumpet, flugelhorn Filippo Vignato trombone Federico Pierantoni trombone Cristiano Arcelli alto sax, soprano sax, bass clarinet Piero Bittolo Bon alto sax, clarinet, bass clarinet Francesco Bigoni tenor sax, clarinet, live electronics Rossano Emili baritone sax, bass clarinet Alfonso Santimone piano, arrangements, conduction, live electronics Danilo Gallo double bass Zeno De Rossi drums
