Thinking Outside The Musical Box
by Donal Fox
What is jazz? It is a state of mind, a spiritual quest for true unfettered artistic expression. A human expression of individual freedom, social freedom and love. Jazz is also about diversity. Diversity is important, isn't it? We expect it in our social lives. We demand respect and honoring in our society as artists and as ...
Mose Allison: American Legend Live in California
by Alberto Bazzurro
New Zion w/ Cyro Baptista: Sunshine Seas
by Mark Corroto
The third release by Jamie Saft's New Zion Trio expands the concepts he launched with his previous efforts, Fight Against Babylon (Veal Records, 2011), and Chaliwa (Veal Records, 2013). His reggae/dub-meets-piano trio explorations expand with the inclusion of Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista. This rhythm trance music casts a much larger net, one of universal spirituality, beyond physical matter ...
Kind of Purple: Jazz Musicians On Prince
by Kurt Gottschalk
"Do you know who Prince kinda reminds me of, particularly as a pianist? Duke! Yeah, he's the Duke Ellington of the eighties to my way of thinking."--Miles Davis The tops of the pop charts isn't where we often expect to find genius. Brilliant performers sometimes, expert attention grabbers maybe more often, but it's not ...
Ben Monder: Amorphae
by Mario Calvitti

Old and Improved
by Jeff Fitzgerald, Genius
It should come as no surprise to those of you who follow this column religiously (welcome members of St. Bud's and Our Lady of Perpetual Drinking) that Your Own Personal Genius must, from time to time, step away from his post at AAJ to recharge his creative batteries. While this happens less often than it used ...
Michael Blake: Fulfillment
by Giuseppe Segala
Solo a ventiquattro migranti fu ...
Rich Halley 4: Eleven
by Alberto Bazzurro
Ci troviamo oggi a occuparci del terzo album del quartetto di Rich Halley, uno all'anno, per cui, dopo Crossing the Passes e The Wisdom of Rocks, usciti rispettivamente nel 2013 e nel 2014, ecco questo Eleven (tanti sono i brani che lo compongono), edito a fine 2015 (e quindi preceduto, in ciò, da Creating Structure) seppure ...
I 10 Cd nel CD-Player di... Miho Hazama
by Vincenzo Roggero
01. Jack Garratt -Phase (Interscope -2016). Meravigliosi colori strumentali, mixing e mastering! 02. David Linx -Follow the Songlines (Naïve -2011).
