Unhinged Sextet

Six performers and composers, all with stellar resumes but based in far- reaching corners of the country, were originally drawn together through long-standing mutual associations. Unhinged Sextet is a collaborative jazz ensemble that is committed to the performance of progressive jazz through original composition. The group’s first CD, Clarity (OA2 22116), was released in 2015 and received positive critical review. Their second CD is scheduled for release in August 2017. Unhinged Sextet: Will Campbell - alto saxophone Matt Olson - tenor saxophone Vern Sielert - trumpet Michael Kocour - piano Jon Hamar - bass Dom Moio - drums

Matt Olson: 789 Miles

Read "789 Miles" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

Wisconsin-born tenor saxophonist/composer Matt Olson has traveled 789 miles from his childhood home to his current home in South Carolina, where he teaches at Furman University. His original compositions here aim to capture influences from his upbringing, but the present is well-represented by compositions from five Furman University students (graduates and current students). The format is ...

Matt Olson: 789 Miles

Read "789 Miles" reviewed by David A. Orthmann

One of the most interesting things about tenor saxophonist Matt Olson's 789 Miles is something it lacks: An anxious, overriding eagerness to impress or knock the listener out at every turn. Instead, the record virtually looks you in the eye, shakes your hand, and then cordially invites you along for the ride. Olson, Hammond B-3 organist ...

Mark Sullivan's Best Releases of 2017

Read "Mark Sullivan's Best Releases of 2017" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

No genre breakdown this year. I've included every release that I rated at 4.5 stars or better, plus a number of 4 star reviews (that was the hard part, as there were lots of those). ECM had an exceptionally strong year, and I had trouble limiting my selection even this much. This is a chronological list, ...

Unhinged Sextet: Don't Blink

Read "Don't Blink" reviewed by David A. Orthmann

Unhinged Sextet is a strong candidate for the best band you'll never hear in a live performance. The members of this cooperative ensemble are spread out across the country, earning their daily bread by training the next generation of musicians, with an emphasis on jazz studies, at various universities. They join forces for brief periods in ...

Unhinged Sextet: Don't Blink

Read "Don't Blink" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

When the members of the collective Unhinged Sextet gathered to record their first album Clarity (OA2 Records, 2015) it was the first time they had played together, despite long-standing mutual associations. Don't Blink continues to demonstrate the chemistry that characterized their first meeting. Once again the music is all original, with contributions from five of the ...

Mark Sullivan’s Best Releases of 2015

Read "Mark Sullivan’s Best Releases of 2015" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

This is my first year end list as an AAJ contributor, hopefully the first of many! I reviewed a lot of great music, major label and independent productions alike. Here's the ten that rose to the top of my list of favorites, in no particular order. Eberhard Weber Hommage à Eberhard ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
