Thad Franklin

Thaddus Jacob Franklin is regarded as one of the most prominent young trumpet players in Chicago. He began formal music studies at the age of 10. At this time, Thad exhibited a serious aptitude for music and a desire to draw upon his creative side. In his first year of playing, he was principal trumpet in the school band and began working with a wide variety of people in the Central Illinois music community. During high school, Franklin auditioned for a position in the Central Illinois Youth Symphony and played a major role in its trumpet section throughout the early ‘90s. Since arriving in New York, trumpeter Alex Nguyen has been establishing himself for his distinctive lyrical and melodic style. The Savannah, Georgia native has garnered praise for his independent projects, including the nine-piece Jazz Conceptions Orchestra, for which he arranges much of the material. While his work as a soloist, bandleader, and arranger has caught the attention of critics, Alex has also been noticed by fellow musicians, appearing with such groups as the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band, the Curtis Fuller Quintet, and the Celebration of Lionel Hampton; and one of his compositions “The First Year” was featured on NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron’s album The Traveler

Dave Douglas is a prolific trumpeter, composer, and educator from New York City known for the stylistic breadth of his work, the lyricism and wide-ranging curiosity of his music, and for keeping a diverse set of ensembles and projects active simultaneously.

His unique contributions to improvised music have garnered distinguished recognition, including a Doris Duke Artist Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award, and two Grammy Award nominations. Douglas’ career spans more than 60 unique original recordings as a leader and more than 500 published works. His current ensembles include the Dave Douglas Quintet; Sound Prints, a band co-led with saxophonist Joe Lovano; Gifts Trio, with guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang; Gifts Quintet, adding saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and cellist Tomeka Reid to the trio; OVERCOME, with vocalists Fay Victor and Camila Meza and instrumentalists Ryan Keberle, Jorge Roeder, and Rudy Royston; and If There Are Mountains, a sextet with pianist & co-leader Elan Mehler featuring haiku and poetry from vocalist Dominique Eade. Douglas is often engaged in special projects which include big bands, tributes, and multi-trumpet ensembles, such as Dizzy Atmosphere: Dizzy Gillespie at Zero Gravity.

Tokyo-based trumpet player Neil Stalnaker has been living and working in Japan since 1998. While living in Tokyo, Neil has been performing, recording and touring with a number of musicians such as Makoto Kuriya, Takeshi Ito, Tommy Campbell, Mark Tourian, Yuichi Inoue, Angela Stribling, and many, many others. Prior to the move to Japan, Neil was living in New York. During the 1980's, he was trumpet soloist with the U.S. Navy's Premier Big Band, "The Commodores". In the '90's, after recovering from major throat cancer he toured Russia and and performed in Europe (Montreux Jazz Festival) with his own bands

Ian Carey is a San Francisco Bay Area–based jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator who “asks deep musical questions and comes up with compelling answers” (Bill Kirchner, editor, The Oxford Companion to Jazz).

His musical projects include the IAN CAREY QUINTET+1 (“a highly skilled band of improvisers” –DownBeat), which has been performing his original compositions for over a decade and has been featured on five albums including the 2020 release Fire in My Head; WOOD METAL PLASTIC, a 7-piece group which “combines the delicately calibrated dynamics of a chamber ensemble with alternating sections of close voicings and free improvisation” (Andrew Gilbert, Berkeleyside); TAKOYAKI 4, a pared-down, street-food–style organ/horns quartet which performs original music and jazz rarities; and DUOCRACY, a duo with pianist Ben Stolorow which explores rare American standards with intimacy and interplay.

Brian Chahley

“This Way” is the newest album from young up-and-coming trumpeter Brian Chahley (20) from Toronto, Canada. After spending two years as a fellow at the prestigious Brubeck Institute (www.brubeckinstitute.org) in California playing alongside some of the world’s finest young talent and studying under some of the biggest names in jazz, Brian brought a mix of other Brubeck Fellows (past and present) to Toronto in January of 2007 to record this album. Featured on the album alongside Brian are Lucas Pino on tenor sax, Glenn Zaleski on piano, Chris Smith on bass and Colin Stranahan on drums. Colin has just begun a two year fellowship at the Monk Institute in New Orleans, while Lucas and Glenn recently continued their education at the New School in New York City

Sammy Lowe

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Samuel "Sammy" Lowe Sammy Lowe had his heart set on playing professional baseball but music became his favorite past time and his ticket to the music major league. One of Birmingham, Alabama's most prolific arrangers, Sammy was the chief arranger and composer for the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra for nearly 22 years. His list of monster hits with the band include, "Bearmash Blues," "Nona," "No Soap," "Midnight Stroll," "Bicycle Bounce" and "Raid the Joint." His arrangement of "I've Got a Right to Cry" for Birmingham vocalist Laura Washington soared on the national charts in 1946. Sammy's big band swing days included gigs with bandleaders Cab Calloway, Lucky Millinder, Sammy Davis, Jr., Sy Oliver and Don Redman
